Full-length die sets are available for both bottleneck rifle and pistol cases and they contain two dies: a full-length sizing die and a seater die. The full-length die works by bumping the shoulder of the case to the extent that it is adjusted up or down in the press. In order to achieve the correct shoulder bump, it is recommended to use a cartridge headspace gauge tool. This die also properly sizes the body of the case and decaps the spent primer, ensuring it can easily chamber for the next firing. The expander ball passes through the case's neck, sizing it to the correct tension. It is important to lubricate cases before full-length sizing.
RCBS seater dies for bottleneck cases enable bullets to be seated accurately in both full-length and neck-sized cases. These seater dies have a built-in crimp ring, allowing the option to crimp the case into the bullet if desired. The seater die can easily be adjusted to crimp or not to crimp by raising or lowering the die position in the press.
Full-length 2-die sets are the foundation of the reloading process, and many shooters can wear out multiple barrels or rifles with just one set. For new reloaders, starting with a full-length die set and learning how to properly set them up is highly recommended before moving onto other types of dies.
