The MDT ESS chassis is equipped with the proven V-block bedding system by MDT, providing a reliable and sturdy base for the rifle action. The magazine well has been reworked for easy insertion and improved stability, while the magazine release has been updated to an ambidextrous paddle that can be comfortably operated with either hand. The recoil lug mortise is compatible with most aftermarket recoil lugs, and the trigger area accommodates most aftermarket triggers.
Additional features include a serrated barricade stop located in front of the magazine well for increased stability, and a polymer forend grip for added comfort at the balance point. The wide fore-grip area, along with the octagonal profile of the forend tube, offers greater flexibility when shooting over bags or improvised rests. Thumb shelves have been added for those who prefer an open grip.
The most significant change in the ESS chassis is its specific buttstock interface, which differs from the traditional AR pattern interface. MDT designed this interface to optimize the placement of the pistol grip relative to the trigger, while still allowing the shooter to choose from a wide variety of AR pattern pistol grips.
The MDT ESS chassis also comes with its own fully adjustable buttstock, similar to MDT’s Skeleton Rifle Stock. The lateral adjustment of the butt-pad and cheek rest can be modified by thumb wheels, offering an adjustable length of pull between 13.4" - 14.4" based on Remington 700 models.
The entire chassis system weighs between 4.4 to 4.8lbs (depending on action), and is CNC machined from aircraft grade aluminum, finished with H-series Cerakote. The fore-grip, butt-pad, and cheek-piece are constructed with composites.
Other important specifications include an ambidextrous, easy reach magazine latch that can be activated with the trigger finger or left hand. The extra-large magazine well facilitates easy mag insertion/removal. The stock height at comb and heel is 0.5” below bore centerline with 1.0” of riser adjustability. The ESS chassis can accommodate barrel contours up to 1.300” straight taper. It accepts AICS pattern magazines for both short and long action, with long action magazines limited to 3.715”. It also accepts aftermarket lugs up to 0.375 thick and tapered. The chassis is compatible with all non-beavertail AR pattern pistol grips, while beavertail grips may require minor trimming.
