The beavertail grip safety is machined from a solid barstock, and certain critical points are left slightly oversized to allow a gunsmith to achieve a true custom fit. The beavertail is designed to be wider than the frame so that it can be fit to the frame instead of the frame to the beavertail. This helps ensure a snug, rattle-free fit. The overall length of the grip safety is longer at the bottom, and its angle is a match for filling the gap between the mainspring housing and the safety. Its radius is .245", which is suitable to fit frames that are pre-cut to .250". Additionally, the pin hole is finish reamed to .158" to further improve fit and function. The large contact pad ensures positive engagement when the hand grasps the gun. Grip safeties with a .220 radius are made specifically to fit Springfield and Caspian frames.
